Coaches:          Sean Coffin

The Seward Park Bears are coming into the 2017-2018 season filled with a group of talented underclass wrestlers, solidified with a few returning experienced junior and seniors.  Here are expected weight classes and line-ups for the Bears:

B(106) – Christopher Lee, 1st year junior wrestler, will be bolstering the weight class.  Christopher has shown to be a hardworking and dedicated wrestler, eager to learn and improve.  Christopher is very athletic, and his length should prove to be a matchup problem at the weight class.  Freshman wrestler, Jeffrey Molina, will also challenge for mat time at 106 lbs.  Jeffrey is also a 1st year wrestler, and has shown great dedication and work ethic in his young Bears Wrestling career.  Jeffrey may also be competing at 99 lbs. in tournament competition.  Tough and hardworking freshman, Zuriel Rivera, could also look to get some mat time in at the 106 or 120 pound weight class.

G (117) – Florence Yuen, freshman and 1st year wrestler, will be holding down the 117 lbs. division.  Florence has shown the ability to learn extremely quickly.  A smart and focused wrestler, Florence not only will be a part of the Bears this season, but will is a major factor in the future.

B (120) – Senior, Marco Ng, is returning for his last year competing as a Bear.  Marco gained much experience in his 1st year wrestling last season and has a knack for pulling out close matches.   Marco will be challenged at the spot by sophomore up and comer, Bryan Zen.  Zen has shown a tremendous upside, the best is yet to come.  Senior, Yi Yang Wu will be competing for spot in the varsity line-up as well.

G (128) – A competitor in every sense of the word, Yuyao Shi will be looking to make a splash in the NYC wrestling scene.  Yuyao has already proved able to win big time matches for the Bears last season.  Only a sophomore, Yuyao has slated herself as a leader on the team, earning the respect of her teammates and coaches.  Yuyao has All-City tools and potential and should be a force for years to come.

B (132) – There is no lack of depth at the 132 lbs. weight class.  Andy Li is returning for his senior campaign.  Jimmy Wang will also look to challenge for matches as well.  Jimmy is a sophomore who utilizes his strength well.  1st year sophomores, Mike Xu and Jason You will be challenging for time at the spot.  Xu and You have bright futures as Seward Park Bears.

G (139) – 1st year wrestler, Angel Zhang will be commanding the 139 lbs. weight class.  Angel, who also trains taekwondo, is part of a very young and talented class.

B (145) – Two of the Bears toughest and most experienced wrestlers will be contending for matches at the 145 lbs. weight class.  Junior, Antonio Aguilar, has shown an unparalleled work ethic.  Aguilar, who will compete in tournaments at 138 lbs.  Aguilar never stops wrestling, so competitors must be ready to go the distance when they step on the mat.  Arlan Kapparov, junior, has the most amount of wrestling experience on the team.  Arlan is coming into his own this season and is well rounded from all positions on the mat.  A work ethic that doesn’t lack anything to be desired, paired with years of mat time, should push Kapparov to the next level.  Both Aguilar and Kapparov have shown early on to be leaders of the team and have helped set the tone for the Seward Park Bears.

G (159) – Sire Toure, junior, will be competing at 159 lbs. for the bears.  Sire is a long and rangy wrestler that possesses unsuspecting strength.  Toure is a finisher and has the chance to put bonus points on the board during every dual meet.  A dedicated and committed Sire Toure should compete for a NYC PSAL City Championship this season.

B (160) – A bruising and physical senior, Huang Lian, will be competing at 160 lbs. for the Seward Park Bears.  Lian off an impressive 1st season, will look to be a solid force in the middle of the line-up.

G (172) – Returning NYC Runner-Up, Emanuella Nortey will be competing at 172 lbs.  Nortey gained a lot of experience last season, which should give her confidence going into her senior campaign.

B (182) – Senior NYC Qualifier, Brian Lora, will be competing for time at the 182 lbs. spot.  Lora, a 3 year wrestler for the Bears, is known for winning big matches for the Bears.  Lora won a playoff match in overtime to help the Bears lock up 3rd place in the 2016-2017 NYC Team Playoffs.  Fellow senior, Jason Marshall, will be vying for mat time at the 182 lbs. position.  Marshall, strong and extremely athletic, turned heads last season in his 1st season of competition.  Jaheim Chapman Green should also see the mat, whether it’s at 182 lbs. or 220 lbs.  Jaheim , “The Dream”, has a tough and physical style that can get overwhelming to his competitors at times.

B (220) – 1st year Freshman, Eddie Chabla and Wei Wu will be competing for time at the 220 lbs. spot.  Both wrestlers have a lot of upside and could be huge parts of the Bears line-up for years to come.

G (255) – Dominique Diaz, freshman, has all the characteristics of a wrestler.  Diaz’s strength and “refuse to give in attitude” set her in a class of her own.  Diaz has big things in her wrestling future, giving her coaches a lot to be excited about in her promising future.

B (285) – Wrestling in the 285 lbs. weight class, Carlos Reyes has done everything his coaches have asked.  Committing himself to wrestling, Reyes has made sure to be on a wrestling mat since last season ended.  The hard-work and dedication should pay off greatly for the Bears and Reyes, who looks to have a breakout season.  Destroying all stereotypes about heavyweight wrestlers, Reyes is one of the hardest workers in the room.  Adopting the moto of the Seward Park Bears, “Never Back Down’, Reyes looks to make himself better every single day.
